A dental crown is a permanent cover that is placed over an original tooth that is either severely decayed, damaged, or cracked. The tooth-shaped “cap” is used to improve a tooth’s appearance, including its shape, size or color.
When a crown is placed on a tooth, it is cemented to fully cover the entire visibility of the tooth.
Your dentist here at DNL might recommend a crown when a tooth needs to be restored due to a large cavity, when a tooth is weak and needs to be reinforced, after a root canal, or when a tooth has cracked. Crowns can also be used for aesthetic reasons, such as covering a discolored tooth, filling in a tooth that has been worn down, or just to create a more a uniform and better appearance for the teeth.
There are several types of crowns that can be made out of different types of materials, such as metal alloys like gold, stainless steel, or ceramic or porcelain.
Our dentists are highly experienced and will have your crowns fitted in no time. The procedure involves numbing the tooth with local anesthesia, and once that is done, depending on the condition of the tooth, it is then reshaped to allow enough room for a crown to be securely fitted. A digital impression of the tooth will then be created with CEREC technology to create the crown. Your dentist will then color-match the crown to the rest of your teeth and place the final crown in less than 30 minutes!
Your dentist will make sure your crown looks and feels great to give you a more beautiful smile!
A crown will allow you to chew better, speak more clearly, and can mask various dental flaws. Call our office today at (203) 255-0108 to schedule an appointment!
